2011 年回顾
今年想写却写不了多少，感觉这一年过的很快，很多事情还没做完，也许这跟公司里面也有关系，在学校里面似乎可以做完，而公司里面很多事情的变化实在太突然。希望尽快把某些事情做好做完，却一直没有机会做。感觉这一年进步并不算大，可能有的事情投入了还没看到成果吧，但是这也说明某些事情规划的并不太好。
一月
去上海跟 mm 见面，回来之后公司年会，好像什么奖都没抽到。当时才买 N900，还在玩 N900 的阶段。然后买了 Sigma 85mm/1.4，适应了一下焦段，觉得这个镜头还是挺值。

过年赶回家，居然特别顺利，不过很早又回北京了。赶上了北京年初第一场雪。

Prabhakar 来访，宣布 Labs 的成立，之后 Yehuda 来做了个报告，大家去 K 歌。

跟小朋友去北京郊区的水库逛了逛，公司继 Hao 走后，Hugh 也去了 Zynga。

入了二手的 180/2.8 和 SP90。

跟小朋友去了水长城，开始养蚂蚁。原来的 manager 离开，开始放羊。

跑去参加了 SIGIR，公司迁址，Labs 的几个大牛到这边做了报告。换了住宿的位置。

新址没什么人待，房东养了只小兔子。新的 manager 到了。

Labs 的 offsite 终于举行了，幸运中奖拿到了 iPad。

prototype 方法与最近邻
这一章也比较简单，所谓 prototype 方法就是为样本选择一些代替品。当然这主要是为了解决监督学习的问题，尽管很多方法都是来自非监督学习。
对分类，比较常见的策略就是为每类应用一些非监督的方法获得 prototype，比如 kmeans、LVQ（learning vector quantatization），这样获得每一类的 prototype，之后便可以直接用 prototype 最近的一个作为分类方法。这种策略不难看成最近邻方法的一种近似，因为不是选取样本本身，而是选择 prototype。kmeans 大家都很熟悉了，略去不谈。LVQ 其实更简单，只是对于监督问题可以做的更细致一点，如每类选择几个 prototype（如随机采样初始化）之后，随机选择样本看看最近的 protoype 是谁，如果同类就将 prototype 靠近采样点（带放回的取样），否则就更远，远近步长用一个常数 
对于最近邻方法能够改进的一般就是修改距离本身，除了常用的欧氏距离以外，还有所谓 tangent distance，这是假定每类数据分布在不同的 manifold 或者曲线上，计算两点的距离应该使用两点所在切线之间的异面直线之间的距离（因此小于两者的欧氏距离）。这种策略对于某些问题非常适用，比如手写体数字识别，我们可以将常见的图片变换作用在一些标准的数字图片上，这样对每个变换得到的序列我们可以创建对应的 manifold，并且拟合获得需要的切方向计算切距离，这个优化问题可以看成是线性约束下二次规划问题，但是也可以转换成简单的无约束的二次规划问题，因而求解非常容易。
对最近邻的另一种改进是对局部使用一个合适的 Mahalanobis 距离，这个 idea 和 LDA 类似，都是让同类方向的距离被压缩，因此选择的是邻域内同类样本和异类样本获得的协方差矩阵 
这样就能更为合理的选择最近邻（称为 DANN，discriminative adaptive nearest neighbor）。
